1-18-2010 : Recipe page Changed

February 1st, 2009

Tonight was the first night I fed raw. I was going to start tomorrow, after shopping around several butcher shops, but being the ancy, over eager person I am, I had to stop by King Soopers on my way home and pick up some chicken. I was going to get a small package of thighs, like most people suggested, but after thinking about it, I got the leg quarters instead. My German Shepherds are bigger dogs, so I figure I would give them bigger pieces.

They LOVED it. I figured Luther would dig right in. He tends to be my little pig. But Zeke has always been picky about food. I’m happy if I can get him to eat 4 cups of dry kibble a day. So I was very, and pleasantly, surprised when he dug right in. He ate two quarters, or roughly 1.75lbs. I stuck to one quarter for Luther, a little under a pound. He ate almost 3 cups this morning (his breakfast portion, and he snuck into Zeke’s bowl when Zeke wouldn’t eat).

After they were done, they both searched the kitchen for twenty minutes, looking for more. I have never seen Zeke eat this happily, and I think that is what won me over. I’ve decided to stick with Raw for now. So chicken it will be for the next two weeks, then I will look at switching them to another meat. Probably pork.

I also found a few butcher shops that I am going to go visit tomorrow. I am also going to steal my father’s Sam’s Club card and check them out. They will probably be the cheapest, but we will see.

February 2nd

Went shopping today. Skipped going to the butchers, and just went to Sam's Club. 1.45$ per lb of thighs and drumsticks, so we purchased roughly 2 weeks worth of chicken. They also had a bundle pack of whole chickens, 0.88$ per lb. So we bought two chickens for 9$. We figured after the two weeks, when the boys are ready to try something new, they can each get half a chicken.

We also went to Walmart and bought a large tub so we could bag all the chicken pieces and freeze them individually. We also bought a cheap food weighing scale so we could write the weight down on the bags. Unfortunatly, after weighing ALL the bags and marking them down, we realized the cheap scale was worthless as far as weighing smaller weights went. So, it's back tomorrow night to return it and purchase the 23$ digital food scale.

Due to that, it's hard to determine how much they have eaten as far as weight goes. Zeke ate the last chicken leg quarter, a drumstick, and a thigh. Luther ate two drumsticks, and a thigh and a half. We also tried giving them each an egg. They didn't seem too fond, and only ate the egg after we cracked it and removed the shell.

I love our concern for our own food, lol. The majority of our freezer is now dedicated to animal food, leaving little room for our food. It may be time to invest in a mini freezer.

We gave the dogs a little bit of hamburger with their chicken, for some variety. They loved it.

February 5th

The dogs received 1/2 a lb of hamburger with their meal tonight. They ate it in seconds. I've seen a big improvement in Zeke's appetite, and he has already put on a few pounds!

February 6th

First carcass tonight! We took a 5 lb chicken and cut it in half down the spine. They loved it, and the organs are great for them. We have decided that one meal a week will be a chicken carcass.

I have also been noticing that already Zeke's fur is feeling a little softer. Of course, that could be all in my head, but I like to think it's the new diet.

It has been a while since updating. Raw feeding has become a lot easier in the past couple months. A rythm has formed, and we now have their basic weekly meals done. The specifics can all be found on the Recipes page.

I have cut back on Zeke's diet a little. He was getting, on average, 2 chicken quarters and 6 ounces of offal a night, equaling roughly 2lbs. However, even though he is still a desired weight, he is becoming border-line over weight. So I have cut him down to 1 chicken quarter and 6 ounces of offal a night. He still gets half a chicken once a week, so that is a 2-3lb meal right there. Within the next week, I am also going to start fasting him one day a week, as well. The day after his chicken carcass. I believe I mentioned doing this before, but I have yet to actually introduce it to him. Luther, being a puppy, will continue to be fed weekly.

I've also found an easy way to feed eggs, as well. Zeke is not fond of the shell, so I just grind everything up in a bowl, shell and all. Then he is forced to eat the shell along with the yolk.

Due to personal reasons, Zeke and I are now on our own. His diet has been modified in the last year or so, but raw feeding has become so much easier.

Pork was tried, but discontinued. Zeke had extremely bad Diarrhea after eating pork, and just refused to eat it most nights. After doing some reading, I have noticed that many dogs can not handle pork that well. It's a shame, because next to chicken, pork is one of the cheaper meats.

Chicken quarters remain to be the main part of the diet. 1 chicken quarter almost nightly. Feeding organs has become easier, as well, after I figured out a system. Because I had problems getting Zeke to eat liver, I decided to liquify everything in a blender. Chicken hearts and gizzards, and Beef liver, along with green tripe when I order it, and wild salmon oil for Zeke's skin. After everything is a liquid, I pour it into ice cube trays, and freeze it. With every meal, Zeke gets 1-2 cubes, and he gobbles them right down. It also cuts down liver handling time from nightly to weekly.

Because pork was no longer a cheap meat solution to offset the high bone content of chicken, and because beef is fairly expensive, I've started purchasing saw trimmings from local butchers. Every butcher has left over meat scraps, and most are happy to make some profit. I can get it for 0.89 cents/lb, much cheaper then the 1.50$/lb + I was spending on hamburger meat or beef.
